Healing With Acupuncture During Stressful Times
by Lori Deutsch, MS, L.Ac., Dipl OM
There’s an old saying: “Money makes the world go around.” Well, the present financial crisis is making a lot of heads spin. A recent poll of 7,000 Americans showed that 8 out of 10 were stressed out because of the economy. Since we know that stress affects the body, it’s no surprise that 47% reported headaches, 35% said they had upset stomachs, and 34% complained of muscular tension.
Headaches, tummy aches, and muscle tension (especially around the neck and shoulders) are not the only ailments that surface during stressful times. Actually, when you think about it, what bodily condition is not affected by stress? Skin problems such as eczema, and emotional disorders like depression and anxiety are commonly seen during stressful times. All types of gastrointestinal conditions crop up in a society that’s constantly on the move and worrying about what’s next. Pain is also a major factor. When people are in psychological distress, they often end up with all kinds of aches and pains – and that makes them feel even more stressed out and depressed. It’s a vicious cycle.
We may not be able to fix the economy right away, but we can reduce our stress levels. The simplest thing you can do is take a long, deep breath. Sit up straight or lie down. Close your eyes. Make sure your shoulders are relaxed, and just let go. Feel your belly rise as you inhale, and then slowly exhale. Do this a few times and it can change your mindset.
To reduce our daily stress levels, we need to increase our happiness levels. That means doing things that feel good, and having an acupuncture treatment is a wonderful way to do that. What? Getting stuck with needles feels good? That’s right. One of the reasons I enjoy what I do is because people get up from my treatment table feeling relaxed, refreshed, and happy. Acupuncture uses sterile, disposable, hair-thin needles that do not hurt. In fact, 18 acupuncture needles can fit into the opening of a hyperdermic syringe. So it’s a totally different experience from getting a “shot.” Often, patients don’t even know that the needle has gone in.
In this ancient science, needles are placed at strategic points on the body to either move stuck energy or create a balanced flow of the precious life force known as Qi (pronounced chee). You may feel instant relaxation with the very first needle. Or, you might feel a soothing energy flow as you rest on the table while the needles work their magic. You might even get a much needed nap during the process. Either way, it’s a positive experience that triggers the healing of body, mind and spirit. Studies show that acupuncture increases endorphins, which are morphine-like compounds that create a sense of well-being and act as analgesics (i.e. pain-relievers). It strengthens the immune system, redistributes energy and decreases stagnation and inflammation. Not only does it help heal current disorders, it’s a great tool for staying healthy and balanced. Acupuncture can make a huge impact on your life. I’ve seen it happen many times. Schedule a treatment or a 30-minute consultation, and begin the process.
